Thibaut Courtois Jumps to Senne Lammens' Defense After Costly Mistake Seals Belgium's Fate in World Cup Defeat

Belgium's Thibaut Courtois has rallied behind teammate Senne Lammens after the goalkeeper's late blunder gifted Spain a 2-1 victory in their World Cup quarter-final. Courtois, who exited the game in the 71st minute due to a muscular problem, offered sympathy to the 24-year-old understudy. Lammens failed to deal with a long-range strike, allowing Mikel Merino to score the winner in the 88th minute.

Courtois, who had wanted to stay on the field, expressed confidence in Lammens' ability to bounce back. "He's a great goalkeeper," Courtois said. "You only get stronger from this." The Real Madrid star revealed he had felt pain in his right leg early in the second half but had wanted to continue playing.

Belgium defender Brandon Mechele also expressed support for Lammens, describing the incident as a "learning moment" for the young goalkeeper. Mechele acknowledged that the ball was difficult to handle and that the defenders could have provided more assistance. The defender emphasized the importance of teamwork, saying "we have to be there for each other and help each other."
