Transfer Guru Behind Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Virgil van Dijk Signings Steps Down from Liverpool Post
Michael Edwards has stepped down as CEO of soccer for Fenway Sports Group, marking the latest change to Liverpool's organizational structure. According to reports, Edwards had expressed his desire to leave as early as autumn 2025 and will now depart with a year remaining on his contract.
Fenway Sports Group president Mike Gordon is expected to assume control of soccer operations, with no replacement for Edwards anticipated. Edwards played a key role in rebuilding Liverpool's squad under Jürgen Klopp, securing notable signings such as Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and Virgil van Dijk, which contributed to the team's Premier League and Champions League victories.
Edwards initially left his post in 2022 but returned to Fenway Sports Group in 2024 to oversee a multi-club model. However, the project was shelved earlier this year after failed attempts to acquire other European clubs, including Bordeaux, Malaga, and Getafe.
His departure comes as Liverpool is also set to lose sporting director Richard Hughes, who will join Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal later this year. Hughes will remain with Liverpool for the summer transfer window, working with new manager Andoni Iraola to strengthen the squad. The club is expected to pursue a new sporting director in the coming weeks, aiming for a smooth transition.
