Aníbal Godoy: Fighting for Panama, Dedicated to Our Country

As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, I am nearing the end of my 16-year tenure with the Panama national team. I have often visualized my final tournament, imagining the electric atmosphere and the weight of responsibility that comes with representing my country.

I want to express my gratitude to the Panamanian people for their unwavering support throughout my career. Wearing the national team jersey has been a blessing, teaching me about the responsibilities that come with representing Panama. Our fans have consistently filled stadiums during World Cup qualifiers and will be present in Toronto and New York for our group stage matches, providing a sense of home-field advantage.

As a result, we are obligated to give our all on the pitch. I have always been committed to my country, never saying no to the national team through good times and bad. This dedication will continue at the World Cup, where expectations are higher than ever.

Since my debut in 2010, Panama has grown into a significant soccer nation, with improvements in structure, administration, and sports. Qualifying for our first World Cup in 2018 was a highlight of my career, but this time around, we have different ambitions. The team is aiming to win its first World Cup game, with the ultimate goal of advancing to the knockout stages.

Our opening match against Ghana is crucial, as a win would give us a solid chance of moving forward. We have set goals for this World Cup and want to assure our fans that we will give everything we have. We believe we will make history this summer, and for me, there is no better way to bid farewell to the national team.
