Deadlocked Wars: How Major Powers Misread the Regions They Attacked

Analysts say Russia and the United States have imposed their own centralized views on Ukraine and Iran, resulting in a costly confrontation. The smaller countries have managed to trap larger ones in this standoff.

In Ukraine, which has faced consistent bombing, President Volodymyr Zelensky has taken a defiant tone against Russian President Vladimir Putin. In an open letter, Zelensky derided Putin for clinging to power as he aged, stating that Putin did not expect full-scale resistance from Ukraine.

Similarly, Iran has pushed back against the "might makes right" mentality, with top officials adopting a more defiant tone. After a recent missile barrage against Israel, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Parliament and Iran's top negotiator, threatened more action, saying Iran's response will not change until there is a sincere commitment to restoring trust.

The recalcitrance of Ukraine and Iran reflects the reality of two wars in stasis, with a lack of trust hindering progress. Presidents Trump and Putin have resisted the idea that weaker powers can fight them to a stalemate, instead relying on negotiations to secure capitulation.
