Haiti Unveils Revised World Cup 2026 Jersey Following Formal Fifa Complaint
Haiti has been forced to make a late change to their World Cup 2026 shirts after FIFA accused them of violating regulations on political speech. The original shirt design, which depicted a war scene from Haiti's battle for independence, has been modified following collaboration between the Haitian Football Federation and shirt manufacturer Saeta.
The design, which featured an illustration of the Battle of Vertieres in 1803, was deemed to contravene FIFA's rules against "political, religious, or personal messages or slogans" on kits. According to Saeta, FIFA determined that certain visual elements could be interpreted differently under its equipment regulations, prompting the request for modifications.
Haiti is set to kick off their World Cup campaign in Group C against Scotland in Boston on Saturday, marking their first World Cup appearance in 52 years. The team has high hopes after a 4-0 win over New Zealand and a narrow 2-1 loss to Peru in pre-tournament friendlies.
In a statement, Saeta said it respected FIFA's decision and implemented the required changes to the design, despite initially intending the illustration to be a celebration of Haitian pride and resilience. The modified shirt will be worn by the team as they face Scotland, Morocco, and Brazil in the group stage.
