Muller Reacts With Two-Word Message After Lionel Messi Ties World Cup Goal Record
Lionel Messi and Thomas Müller, both World Cup champions, have shared the biggest stages in global soccer. As they near the end of their careers in Major League Soccer, a mutual respect has developed between them.
On Tuesday, Müller watched as Messi scored a hat-trick in Argentina's 3-0 win over Algeria, tying Miroslav Klose's all-time men's World Cup goal record. Müller, working as a TV pundit, congratulated Messi on Instagram, posting "This guy" alongside a goat emoji.
The two legends have a history of competing in high-stakes games, including the 2014 World Cup final and the UEFA Champions League. They last faced each other in the 2025 MLS Cup, where Messi's Inter Miami defeated Müller's Vancouver Whitecaps.
Müller has expressed admiration for Messi, describing him as "unique, irreplaceable, and the best." Although they may not play against each other again, with Müller's contract expiring at the end of the 2026 season, a potential rematch could occur if their teams advance to the MLS Cup final or meet in the Leagues Cup.
