Seven Arrested After Vandalism Spree Leaves Anti-Trump Graffiti and Slashed Tires on the National Mall

Interior Secretary Doug Burgum has condemned a recent wave of vandalism targeting the National Mall, including the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which sustained significant damage. The pool's industrial rubber liner was cut with a box cutter, resulting in a 350-foot long gash. Authorities have made seven arrests, issued multiple citations, and filed 18 police reports in connection with the incident.

Burgum emphasized that such acts are an attack on the country and will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. The vandalism included anti-Trump graffiti, with markings such as "8647," which some interpret as a call to violence or a call to remove the president.

The damage occurred despite the Trump administration's efforts to restore and beautify the nation's capital ahead of the upcoming celebration of America's 250th anniversary. Over 50 parks and circles have been restored, 48 monuments repaired, and 22 fountains returned to service.

President Donald Trump addressed the vandalism, stating that the newly restored Reflecting Pool had been deliberately targeted. Burgum noted that the vandalism is equivalent to throwing paint on Lincoln's statue in the eyes of the law. A fence has been installed around the Reflecting Pool to protect it and prepare for July 4 festivities, which will include fireworks on either side of the monument.
