Spencer Pratt, Former Reality TV Star, Faces Uphill Battle in Los Angeles Mayor's Race
Spencer Pratt, who initially gained notoriety as an instigator on MTV's iconic reality show "The Hills" in the early 2000s, has slipped to third place in the competition for the mayoral seat of Los Angeles following the release of new ballot results on June 7.
Formerly perceived as a reality TV villain, Pratt has successfully rebranded his public persona as a conservative outsider in his bid to challenge and ultimately unseat the current Mayor, Karen Bass, but his campaign has now been surpassed by that of progressive City Councilwoman Nithya Raman.
Raman is now in the lead with a percentage of 27.12%, having received a total of 196,198 votes, whereas Pratt has secured 26.69% of the votes, with a total of 193,085 votes, as per the election results that were released on June 7 by the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk. The current incumbent, Bass, maintains a significant advantage, holding 34.68% of the total votes, with a substantial 250,871 ballots cast in their favor.
In the ballot count that took place on June 6, Raman managed to make significant progress, gaining ground with 26.21% of the votes, whereas Pratt had 27.32% of the votes at that point in time.
The update was released on the same day that President Donald Trump stormed out of an interview that was broadcast on June 7, with "Meet the Press" moderator Kristen Welker, following a heated and tense argument regarding the security of elections in California.
Additionally, Pratt has also attempted to raise suspicions and cast doubt on the safety and integrity of the electoral process in Los Angeles, by publicly questioning the accuracy of the city's vote count and by circulating a speculative theory that appears to link the number of votes that were found to a news story that was published on the web in March by the California Housing Partnership, which specifically focused on the rates of homelessness in the city of Los Angeles.
Trump made an accusation against California, claiming that the state's June 2 primaries were "rigged" and involved election "cheating", which was his response after Welker initially stated that "Republicans are doing well in California". Pratt, who holds conservative views, is currently in the lead, while Steve Hilton, the gubernatorial candidate endorsed by Trump, is in second place, surpassing billionaire Tom Steyer.
Raman, who initially secured a seat on the Los Angeles City Council in the year 2020, utilized a rendition of the popular song "Unwritten", which is famously known as the theme song from the television show "The Hills" and was popularized by the singer Natasha Bedingfield, in one of her closing campaign advertisements. Notably, Raman's victory in 2020 marked a significant milestone, as it was the first instance in 17 years where a challenger successfully defeated a sitting councilmember.
The former ally of Bass successfully won her reelection bid in the year 2024. She garnered significant attention earlier in the current year when she made the decision to enter the race at the very last day it was possible to do so, which fell on February 7.
She has previously stated that Bass was unable to effectively lead the city, and has also referred to Pratt as an individual who holds extreme right-wing views and is empowered by the MAGA movement, which she believes is redirecting people's frustrations about the city into intense emotions of fear, anger, and hatred.
Although Pratt is a political novice, he has effectively utilized the lingering disappointments associated with Bass' management of the Los Angeles wildfires that occurred last year, an event in which he personally suffered the loss of his home, as a key component of his campaign to unseat the former congresswoman. In addition to this, Pratt has also focused intensely on the issue of homelessness in the city, using it as a central theme in his appeal to local mothers.
The Los Angeles mayoral race, as well as the contest to replace California Governor Gavin Newsom, who is anticipated to be a candidate in the 2028 presidential election, have collectively provided the nation with a more detailed examination of the "jungle primary" system. This system is characterized by the fact that the top two candidates, regardless of their party affiliation, are the ones who advance to the next round in the state with the largest population in the country.
National Republicans have expressed strong disapproval of the prolonged ballot tabulation process that took place over several days in Los Angeles, which is the second most populous city in the United States, ranking just behind New York City, a city that itself experienced a highly disorganized mayoral race, ultimately resulting in a victory for Democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani on November 4 of the previous year.
