Supreme Court Temporarily Blocks Trump from Firing Federal Reserve Board Member Lisa Cook

The US Supreme Court has temporarily blocked President Donald Trump's attempt to fire Federal Reserve Board of Governors member Lisa Cook, allowing her to retain her position. Cook, a Democratic appointee and the first Black woman to serve on the central bank's advisory committee, has 10 years left on her 14-year term.

The court's decision draws a line at the Fed's independence from White House interference, despite recognizing the president's expansive power over executive branch agencies. Federal law permits presidents to remove a Fed governor, but only for cause, with the heart of Trump's appeal focusing on what constitutes "cause" and the due process owed.

Trump had asserted that allegations of mortgage fraud against Cook, raised by Federal Housing Finance Agency Director Bill Pulte, were sufficient basis for her removal. However, Cook's attorneys argue that the allegations are a pretext for a politically motivated effort to manipulate the Fed's policy board. The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into the matter.

The court's decision is seen as a victory for the Federal Reserve's independence, at least in the near term, and marks a significant development in the ongoing dispute. The case will continue to be examined, with no lower court having thoroughly considered the legal or constitutional issues connected to the dispute.
