Team Forfeits Game After Players Refuse to Wear Pride Gear, Event to Continue as Planned

A minor league team in the independent Atlantic League has announced it will forfeit its game on Thursday, June 18, after several players refused to wear jerseys commemorating the club's Pride Night. The York Revolution made the announcement on Wednesday, stating that Pride Night activities will still proceed as a free admission event. Fans holding tickets for the game can redeem them for a future date.

The players' decision comes after San Francisco Giants pitchers Landen Roupp, JT Brubaker, and Sam Hentges either inscribed a Bible verse on their caps or refused to wear commemorative hats for the club's Pride night on June 12. The York Revolution has called the players' actions "completely inconsistent" with their vision as a welcoming place.

In response, the club will make a $10,000 donation to a local LGBTQA+ resource center. The team stated that hosting the Pride event is more important than forcing players to wear jerseys they are not comfortable with. The Atlantic League, where the York Revolution plays, has a history of funneling former major leaguers and younger players back to affiliated ball. The team's decision has sparked attention, highlighting the challenges of balancing player comfort with community values.
