USMNT Finds Ideal World Cup Base After Three-Year Search, A Move Described As 'Crazy'

The attention to detail at the practice facility is a testament to the team's commitment to creating an environment that fosters success. Every aspect of the facility, from the locker rooms to the medical treatment room, has been carefully designed to meet the players' needs. The 24 fields provide ample space for training and practice, allowing the team to fine-tune their skills without feeling cramped or restricted.

According to Zapatka, the team's goal is to create a sense of normalcy and routine, even in the midst of a high-pressure tournament like the World Cup. "We want the players to feel like they're in a familiar environment, where they can just focus on their game," he explained. To achieve this, the team has brought in familiar faces and comforts from back home, including the team's chef, who is responsible for providing healthy and nutritious meals.

The team's base camp in Southern California is also strategically located, with easy access to top-notch medical facilities and other resources that may be needed during the tournament. This has helped to alleviate some of the logistical challenges that can come with competing in a major international tournament. With their base camp in place, the U.S. team can now focus on the task at hand: preparing for their first match and making a deep run in the World Cup.

The selection process for the U.S. team's hotel and training facility at the World Cup has historically been driven by the manager's preferences. In the past, this has led to a range of locations, from urban centers like Hamburg and Sao Paulo to more remote areas like Irene Country Lodge outside of Johannesburg.

This time around, the process was more complex, with Zapatka's search beginning three years ago under former manager Gregg Berhalter. FIFA provided a list of potential hotel and training site combinations, with teams requesting their preferred locations and ties broken by FIFA ranking and the number of games played in the area.

When the U.S. learned it would play two games in the Los Angeles area, the team sought a location that was removed from the city but still within driving distance. Initially, the U.S. Soccer Federation chose a hotel in Laguna Niguel and a training site at UC Irvine, but the latter backed out due to disagreements with FIFA over contractual demands.

The team then shifted to Great Park, which was still within driving distance to SoFi Stadium and offered a soccer-specific facility. The location was sealed after Zapatka met with the city community services manager, Steven Stewart, who welcomed the team to their "new home." The facilities and branding opportunities, including a massive balloon with the U.S. Soccer logo, also played a role in the decision.

The change in manager from Berhalter to Pochettino did not affect the decision, as Pochettino had previously approved UC Irvine and his assistant, Jesus Perez, gave his blessing to the switch to Great Park. In contrast to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where the team had a single point of contact for most logistics, this tournament will require more movement and coordination.

The team will start with a match against Australia in Seattle and then return to their base camp in Irvine, leaving some equipment behind and bringing the rest with them. After the final group stage match against Türkiye, the U.S. will leave their base camp, as FIFA rules require teams to change locations for the knockout rounds. The exact departure date will depend on the team's finish in the group stage, with possible departure dates ranging from June 29 to July 1.

The team's ability to adapt to new environments will be crucial in the knockout stages, where they will face unfamiliar opponents and facilities. Zapatka's meticulous planning and preparation will be put to the test as he works to replicate the conditions that have allowed the team to thrive at Great Park. With the team's recovery equipment in tow, they will aim to maintain their physical and mental edge as they navigate the challenges of the tournament. As the U.S. embarks on this journey, their ultimate goal remains unchanged: to advance through the knockout stages and make a deep run in the World Cup.
