Carlo Ancelotti to Remain Brazil Head Coach Despite Disappointing World Cup Campaign

Brazilian Football Director Rodrigo Caetano has confirmed that Carlo Ancelotti will remain in charge of the national team through the 2030 World Cup cycle. This comes after Brazil's 2-1 defeat to Norway in the last 16 on Sunday, which extended their wait for a sixth World Cup title to at least 28 years.

Erling Haaland's double at the New York/New Jersey Stadium sent Brazil home, prompting a fierce inquest into the team's performance and Ancelotti's decisions. Caetano attributed the team's failure to the lack of proper, stable long-term guidance, saying, "He is our manager and will be throughout this cycle."

Ancelotti faced criticism for his decisions, including allowing midfielder Bruno Guimaraes to take an early penalty, which he missed, and for leaving veterans Casemiro and Danilo on the field until the end of the match. The introduction of forward Neymar in the second half also had little impact, beyond converting a penalty in added time.

Brazilian media has been scathing in its assessment, with O Globo criticizing Neymar's behavior after the penalty, saying it revealed a man "incapable of stepping away from his own reflection." SporTV host Andre Rizek offered a bleak diagnosis, saying, "Brazilian football has hit rock bottom" and that the team has "gotten used to losing."

The defeat has raised questions about the future of Brazilian football, with the team now facing a long wait until the next World Cup. The current tournament, featuring 48 national teams, is taking place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and will conclude on July 19th.
