Democrats Caught Off Guard by Radical Proposal to Overhaul America's System

House Democrats have expressed reluctance to comment on a newly announced plan by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) to overhaul the US political system. The plan, outlined in the DSA's "Workers Deserve More" platform, calls for the abolition of the Senate and the presidency, replacing them with an executive branch and judiciary elected by and subordinate to Congress.

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., stated that he does not support the proposal, adding that he has not read the details. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., dodged questions on the new agenda, while Rep. Pete Aguilar, D-Calif., downplayed concerns about the impact of far-left, socialist candidates on the Democratic party's agenda.

The DSA platform also advocates for the complete abolishment of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), pardoning all immigrants, and defunding the Department of War. The organization has long pushed for ICE to be abolished and is seeking an "immediate end to all deportations" and extended voting rights to noncitizens.

The DSA's plan has sparked concerns about the influence of socialist ideology on the Democratic party, particularly as several DSA members have won primary elections this year. However, Aguilar expressed confidence in working with all Democratic colleagues, regardless of their ideology. The DSA has outlined formal requirements for candidates seeking endorsement, including acceptance and promotion of the organization's program.
