WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump targeted Democratic Sen. Jon Ossoff of Georgia in a July 22 speech, labeling him a "Democrat communist" as Republicans aim to defeat the senator in November's midterm election.
In his remarks at Wheeler High School in Marietta, Georgia, Trump attempted to mock Ossoff by referencing the 1980s character "Pee-wee Herman," but initially misspoke, saying "Pinky Herman." He later corrected himself, saying "Maybe the most important man in this room right now is not here. His name is Mike Collins and he's going to beat Pee-wee Herman."
Trump's trip to Georgia is part of Republican efforts to flip a Democratic-held Senate seat and maintain their 53-47 seat advantage. Recent polling shows Ossoff leading in the race, which he won in 2020 alongside fellow Democratic Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock and former President Joe Biden.
During his speech, Trump claimed Ossoff and Democrats want to "let the Marxists into power, bankrupt your families and leave you totally independent with wide open borders." He also referenced a 2017 special election for a Georgia congressional seat that Ossoff narrowly lost, saying "I fought Ossoff before, and as you know, we won."
Trump's visit to Georgia follows a primetime speech on July 16, in which he warned of election vulnerabilities and alleged Chinese interference in the 2020 election without providing new evidence. The FBI has opened an investigation into the 2020 election results in Georgia, which Trump has baselessly claimed he won.
