Iran Launches New Attack on US Base in Kuwait, Ramping Up Escalating Tensions in the Region
Iran has announced it is targeting American forces and bases across the region. In February, President Donald Trump initiated "major combat operations" against Iran, with joint US-Israeli strikes targeting military, government, and infrastructure sites. Despite negotiations starting in June, aimed at a war-ending deal, both countries have continued to exchange strikes. The strategic Strait of Hormuz remains a primary flashpoint.
Air raid sirens were activated in Bahrain, while Saudi Arabia's Civil Defense issued an alert in the eastern city of Dammam, which was lifted shortly after. Maritime intelligence company Kpler reported 13 crossings of the Strait of Hormuz on July 20 and nine on July 21. However, traffic declined sharply on July 21, with Strait of Hormuz crossings down 31% to nine vessels.
Kpler warned that attacks in the Strait of Hormuz are reinforcing concerns about uncertainty in regional chokepoints, potentially leading to increased freight costs and higher geopolitical risk premiums for energy markets. The company also noted a decline in traffic in the Bab el-Mandab Strait, which sits at the southern end of the Red Sea.
Meanwhile, Jordan's air defenses intercepted eight out of 10 projectiles fired by Iran, including six missiles and four drones. Two Iranian missiles fell in remote areas, but no injuries or damage were reported. Additionally, Iran's military claimed to have launched drone strikes targeting US Army ammunition storage and logistical sites at Camp Doha in western Kuwait.
