Portland Timbers Appoint Marti Cifuentes as Their New Head Coach
The Portland Timbers have appointed Marti Cifuentes as their new head coach, signing him to a three-year contract through the 2028-29 MLS season. Cifuentes, 44, replaces Phil Neville, who was relieved of his duties in May. Interim head coach Jack Cassidy will remain in charge until Cifuentes' arrival.
A native of Catalonia, Spain, Cifuentes brings a wealth of experience from coaching stints in England, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Netherlands, and Spain. His most recent role was at Leicester City in the EFL Championship, where he recorded an 11-9-11 record in all competitions. Cifuentes has also managed QPR, Hammarby, Aalborg, and Sandefjord, among other clubs, helping QPR avoid relegation from the EFL Championship in 2024 and leading Hammarby to a Svenska Cupen final berth.
