Senator Warner Vows to Block Jay Clayton's Confirmation as Director of National Intelligence
Democratic Sen. Mark Warner has announced he will not vote to confirm Jay Clayton as director of national intelligence due to Clayton's inability to acknowledge President Joe Biden as the winner of the 2020 election. Despite this, Warner expects Clayton to be confirmed, given the Republican-controlled Senate.
Clayton, currently the US attorney for the Southern District of New York, was questioned by Democrats on the Senate Intelligence Committee last week about the 2020 presidential election results. He refused to confirm Biden as the winner, stating only that he was "certified" as the winner.
President Donald Trump recently accused China of interfering in American elections, a claim China has denied. Trump also declassified documents allegedly showing China's involvement in the 2020 election, but senators from both parties have stated that these documents contain mostly previously known information and do not prove election theft.
Warner considers Russia and Iran to be bigger threats to US elections than China, citing Russia's history of influencing elections in favor of Trump and Iran's activities against him. A Russian spokesman has denied any interference in US elections.
Trump continues to push for the passage of the SAVE America Act, a voting bill requiring photo ID and proof of citizenship to register to vote. Democrats are opposed to the bill, but Warner has expressed support for a uniform ID requirement, provided it is applied consistently and does not lead to voter disenfranchisement.
