William Shatner and Daughter Given Devastating '5 Months to Live' Diagnosis After Receiving Cancer News
William Shatner, 95, and his youngest daughter Melanie Shatner Gretsch, 61, have overcome a significant challenge together, simultaneously battling cancer diagnoses. Shatner was diagnosed with Stage 4 malignant melanoma, while his daughter fought Stage 4 breast cancer three years ago.
Shatner's health issues began in June 2023 when a lump formed on his cheek, which was later found to be a stage-four malignancy. His daughter received a similar diagnosis around the same time, with both being told they had approximately five months to live.
After undergoing surgery and two years of immunotherapy, Shatner's cancer has spread to his lungs and brain, but he has now recovered. His daughter has also overcome her cancer scare, with Shatner stating, "We're cancer-free."
The experience has prompted the father-daughter duo to launch a new weekly podcast series, "No Time But Now," where they will interview health experts and survivors, including end-of-life advocate Alua Arthur and Olympic gold medalist Scott Hamilton. The podcast is set to launch on July 29.
Shatner has two other daughters, Leslie Shatner, 67, and Lisabeth Shatner, 65, with his late wife, actress Gloria Rand. Melanie recalled the challenging time, saying she lacked the strength to care for herself while also fearing the loss of her father.
