National Mall's Reflecting Pool Suffers Paint Peeling Off After Recent Renovations: See Stunning Photos

A newly applied sealant at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has started peeling off, just days after its application. Getty Images has released photos showing tears in the sealant and patches of "American Flag Blue" paint floating on the surface. The issue is the latest in a series of problems to arise since the pool's repainting, part of a renovation project commissioned by President Donald Trump.

The pool had been plagued by algae growth, with aerial photos on June 16 revealing a significant infestation. In an attempt to combat the issue, workers poured hydrogen peroxide into the pool on June 17, but parts of the pool remained green.

The renovation project, announced in April, aims to address the pool's cleanliness and leaking foundation, which had been the subject of complaints. The National Park Service reported that the pool had been leaking 16 million gallons of water per year. The project, which includes sandblasting, caulking, and resurfacing the pool basin, is part of a broader initiative to refurbish city landmarks ahead of the Fourth of July and the country's 250th birthday celebrations.

The total cost of the renovations is approximately $16 million, with Atlantic Industrial Coatings awarded a $14.2 million contract to coat the pool with a dark navy blue color. The new color is expected to improve the pool's reflection qualities, which had been compromised by the previous gray concrete surface that had collected algae and turned green.
