Nithya Raman Pulls Ahead of Spencer Pratt in Shocking Los Angeles Mayoral Race Upset

Mayor Karen Bass has already successfully secured her position in the upcoming runoff election, solidifying her place as one of the top contenders.

The Los Angeles City Councilmember, Nithya Raman, is projected by the Associated Press to be the second candidate to advance to the highly anticipated November Los Angeles mayoral runoff election, thereby surpassing Spencer Pratt.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has already achieved a significant milestone by advancing to the election, further establishing her presence in the mayoral race.

In spite of the notable reality TV star Spencer Pratt's impressive social media presence, which has garnered substantial online traction for his campaign, it appears that the former star of "The Hills" is now no longer a viable candidate in the running.

Initially, Pratt, Bass, and Raman were engaged in a closely contested three-way race in the days leading up to Election Day, with each candidate vying for a spot in the runoff election.

In the recent days preceding the election, Nithya Raman consistently made significant gains, ultimately surpassing Spencer Pratt's initial lead over her, which he had established on primary night, and thus altering the dynamics of the race.

Alex Stack, a spokesperson for the Bass campaign, expressed the team's anticipation of emerging victorious in a contest against an opponent who permits encampments to be established near schools and actively opposes the recruitment of additional police officers, yet fails to take a stance on preserving Hollywood jobs and resisting when Immigration and Customs Enforcement invades Los Angeles, as stated in a statement released on Sunday.

It was in February that Raman launched a surprise last-minute bid to run for L.A. mayor, posing a challenge to Bass, whom she had previously endorsed, in a move that caught many off guard.

Raman initially secured a seat on the City Council in 2020, making history by becoming the first Asian American woman and the first individual of South Asian descent to serve on the City Council, thereby breaking new ground in the city's political landscape. Additionally, she achieved a notable milestone by being the first challenger in 17 years to successfully defeat a sitting councilmember, which marked a significant upset.

As a result of the fact that no candidate managed to secure more than 50% of the total votes cast, there is currently no outright winner, and consequently, the top two candidates who received the most votes will proceed to participate in a runoff election scheduled to take place in November, in accordance with the standard electoral procedures.
