Record-Shattering Temperatures Expected to Scorch the Nation This Week

A severe heat wave is expected to intensify across the central to eastern United States this week, according to the National Weather Service. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Prediction Center warns that all-time high temperature records could be set later this week.

Approximately 90 million Americans are under an extreme heat watch or warning, with tens of millions more under a heat advisory alert. At the peak of the heat wave, around 230 million people - roughly two-thirds of the US population - may be exposed to extreme heat, potentially leading to health issues.

A heat dome will develop and expand over the central United States, affecting over two dozen states, including parts of the East, through the Independence Day weekend. High temperatures combined with high humidity will result in heat indices of 100-110 degrees, with some areas reaching as high as 115 degrees.

The prolonged heat, coupled with limited overnight relief, increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations. The Weather Prediction Center advises that the combination of daytime heating and limited nighttime relief will exacerbate this risk.

The heat dome, a large bulge of sinking warm air, can drive temperatures 30 degrees above normal, creating hazardous conditions. This high-pressure system traps warm air, causing it to be pushed to the Earth's surface and remain there for extended periods.

The heat wave is expected to persist through the Fourth of July holiday and possibly beyond, with the high heat potentially beginning to subside from west to east over the weekend due to clouds and thunderstorms.
