Stanley Cup Finalists Endure Longest Wait for Glory in NHL History

The pursuit of the Stanley Cup is a coveted goal for NHL players, with only a select few achieving it each year. This season, five finalists have waited the longest for their first championship title.

One of them is a 2010 first overall draft pick, who has experienced a rollercoaster career with multiple teams, including Edmonton, New Jersey, Arizona, Boston, Buffalo, and Chicago. However, since joining the Carolina Hurricanes in January 2025, he has found a solid spot in the lineup, leading the key line and topping the club's scoring chart with 16 points in 15 playoff games.

Another player, the only Czech in the final, previously played for the Stanley Cup in 2016 with San Jose but was eliminated. He has since struggled to reach the final, prompting him to seek a trade to a competitive team. Now, he is just three wins away from achieving his goal, having accumulated 11 points in 18 playoff games.

A cornerstone defenseman, who is under contract for another five seasons, has been instrumental in his team's success, despite not scoring a goal in this year's playoffs. He is the team's second-highest scoring defenseman and has a long history with the Hurricanes, having started his career with the team.

A hard-working defensive specialist has been a vital component of the Hurricanes, wearing the "A" on his jersey for seven years. Although he has only scored one goal in the playoffs, it was a crucial game-winner in double overtime against Ottawa.

The only player on the list to have never changed teams, a current Olympic champion and two-time Lady Byng Trophy winner, has been loyal to the Hurricanes since being drafted in 2012. Despite missing most of the season due to injury, he has been playing at full strength in the playoffs, averaging 23 minutes and 12 seconds per game.
