Obama Warns America May Be 'Worse Off' Now Than Before Iran Conflict Escalated

Former US President Barack Obama has expressed concerns that the country may be "worse off" now than before the conflict with Iran began. In an interview, Obama stated that the US has "fought a war, spent billions of dollars, and put enormous strain on our military," resulting in numerous deaths, yet the situation seems to have returned to its pre-war state.

Obama made these remarks ahead of the public opening of the Obama Presidential Center, in response to the recent memorandum of understanding between the US and Iran. He welcomed the ceasefire and expressed hope that it would hold, while questioning the rationale behind the conflict.

The former president noted that the Iran nuclear deal, negotiated during his administration, had restricted Iran's nuclear development. However, the US withdrawal from the agreement in 2018 led to Iran expanding its nuclear capacity. The current memorandum of understanding does not fully address the fate of Iran's nuclear program, with a 60-day deadline set for negotiators to reach a more permanent deal.

Obama also reflected on the current state of American democracy, describing it as a period of disruption and polarization. He believes that his presidential center serves as a reminder of the importance of civic responsibility and accountability in government. The center, he said, encourages people to recognize their role in ensuring that elected officials are held accountable, and that this is an ongoing process that requires continuous effort.
